Holland Laboratory of the American Red Cross, located in Rockville, MD, seeks a Scientist, for its Transmissible Disease Department. SUMMARY Conducts complex research and/or development projects to support quality operations, regulatory compliance, and operational efficiency of blood services/products. RESPONSIBILITIES * Independently conceives and designs a variety of research or development projects related to development of testing and treatments for TSE diseases, addresses the interspecies transmission of TSEs and is successful in obtaining support through internal review or extramural funding from outside agencies. * Develops detailed protocols for development and optimization of methods for detection of prions in blood and body fluids as well as the new approaches for studies of interaction of prion protein with other molecules in vitro and in vivo and therapeutic treatments using experimental animals. * Publishes manuscripts reporting on research studies as well as reviews related to the candidate s area of scientific expertise. * Submits summary reports to the funding agencies regarding the work performed, progress made, and conclusions reached; shares findings with scientific community at scientific meetings. * Typically has unit-specific responsibilities within the scope of the job. * Exposure to potentially harmful chemical and biological substance is possible for some projects, thereby requiring appropriate laboratory protective gear. It is expected that candidate will be working in Biosafety-2 and Biosafety-3 environment and with small laboratory animals. May require some business travel. Operational flexibility may be required to meet business needs.
