Class Description


Position Overview:
A Recreation Arts Instructor/ASL Interpreter is to provide on-site assistance to participants with physical, developmental/intellectual and/or emotional disabilities as they integrate into general recreation programs. Interpreters work in the field, facilitating communication between the participant and instructors, coaches, staff, teammates, parents, guardians, family members and volunteers. Location and type of programs varies based on the participants. Work may be performed/conducted in physically stimulating environment (heat, cold). (This position does not have guaranteed hours, candidates selected will be working as needed for programming.)
Typical Examples of the Work:
The following examples illustrate the work performed in the positions in this class. Positions may require some or all of these examples depending on the scope of work and where the individual is assigned within the agency. This list is not inclusive. A position may require related duties not listed, if necessary, to accomplish the work of the agency.
  • Serves in a professional capacity as the primary communication facilitator between hearing individuals and individuals who are deaf or hard of hearing.
  • Interprets all communication including both voice-to sign and sign-to-voice.
  • Accommodates participants' language needs and preferences.
  • Supports the participant's participation in the recreation or recreation-related program by interpreting instructions/communication from the coach, volunteer, staff and/or other participants.
  • Assists with, as directed by the coach/program instructor, participant behavior and tasks as needed.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Ability to work with youth with and without disabilities
  • Ability to communicate effectively
  • Ability to adapt quickly
Required Education and Experience:
Minimum age of 18 years old

Education: Graduation from a recognized four year college or university with a major in Deaf Studies with a concentration in ASL/English Interpreting or a closely related field.

Experience: Experience as an interpreter for the deaf and hard of hearing

Preferred: National Interpreter Certification (NIC) from the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) or a passing score of 4.0 or higher on the Educational Interpreter Performance Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID). Please provide proof of certification upon applying.

Equivalencies: Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a GED certificate and completion of an American Sign Language Interpreter program of at least 30 units; or an equivalent combination of relevant education and experience.

The salary is $18-$20 per hour based upon the relevant education, experience, and certifications.  Therefore, it is important for all applicants to include ALL relevant experience on the application and submit copies of degrees and/or transcripts along with their application at the time of submission.
